Annotated Bibliography

Rao, M. L., et al. "The untapped potential of Indian classical music." Indian Journal of Psychiatry, vol. 59, no. 2, 2017, pp. 220-222.

The present article aims at reviewing the literature to understand how Indian classical music could help in treating different mental disorders. It also explains how Indian raagas are traditionally connected with curing ailments, inducing sleep and improving psychological health. The authors describe cases where certain raagas are believed to induce certain moods or help reduce anxiety. The study also urges further research in order to investigate more systematically the impact of raaga-based therapy in psychiatry. It is meant to help connect the conventional approaches and the scientific ones, supporting a holistic approach to tackling mental disorders.

This source is relevant for this research paper since it offers a scientific angle as to how mental health benefits can be measured from Indian classical music. It is both historical and current, which lays out definitions and necessary history well. The authors emphasize the importance of carrying out empirical research to prove the conventional beliefs. From this source, I hope to provide an understanding of how raagas are thought to affect mental states. In relation to the other sources the trustworthiness of this article is boosted by the fact that it provides both traditions and science.

Harrison, Jahnavi. "Ragatherapy: Indian music's healing powers." Darbar Arts Culture and Heritage Trust, 2019. (https://www.darbar.org/article/ragatherapy-indian-music-s-healing-powers

Harrison also looks at the practice of “raaga chikitsa,” a practice of ancient India that employs ragas as treatment. The article therefore highlights on the special features of particular ragas, for instance on how they can reduce stress, enhance moods, and even control the functioning of physical systems. Also, the article covers the relationship between ragas and the chakra or energy centers in the body as a way of healing. The author will focus on the need to bring this tradition into the modern world and incorporating it into well-being practice.

This article is an informative read about the cultural and traditional background of raga therapy, and how certain ragas work for the body and the soul. Although it has quite persuasive examples, it lacks quantitative data suggesting a more qualitative approach. However, this source is going to be useful to my research as it will help to elaborate the practical use of ragas and their original healing functions, thus adding to the cultural background of my paper. I will use it to show how raga therapy fits into other Indian practices, comparing the historical treatment of raga therapy to the scientific treatment of the topic in other sources. Because of its focus on tradition, it can be paired with other more scholarly articles.

Swamy, Mythili H. "The History, Current Role, and Future of Music Therapy in India." Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy, vol. 17, no. 3, 2017. (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5618810/#:~:text=Listening%20to%20certain%20ragas%2C%20for,experience%20of%20hope%20and%20optimism.)

Swamy’s article traces the evolution of music therapy in India, highlighting its roots in religious and spiritual practices like chanting and devotional singing. The article explores the current applications of music therapy in clinical and educational settings, revealing its potential to have a positive impact on mental health outcomes. Swamy’s goal is to underscore the importance of integrating traditional practices with modern therapeutic approaches.

This source is integral to my research as it provides an overview of the historical and contemporary role of music therapy in India. It is useful in understanding the cultural meaning of Indian classical music and also useful in explaining the challenges of professionalising music therapy. I will use this source to provide background information on the development of music therapy and to support the claim that using traditional practices with modern techniques can enhance its efficiency. Compared to other sources, this article offers a broader perspective, including not only historical analysis but also the prognosis for the further development of music therapy.
