Chasing The Dragon: Group Work

Chasing the Dragon: Life of an Opiate Addict

Summary: The video highlights people's experiences with various drugs, exploring how their addictions began and the consequences they faced. Often, addiction starts unexpectedly, even for those who grew up in healthy and stable environments. The FBI and DEA have released a documentary titled "Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict," designed to educate individuals on the dangers and effects.

Notes from video: --Addiction rewires the brain by distorting its reward system, creating a false reality where the "high" becomes an overpowering need. This cycle of craving takes control, leading a person to feel like they must constantly chase that fleeting sense of euphoria. -2014 National survey estimated 1.4 million people in the U.S. misused a prescribed pain killer that year. -People who take prescription painkillers can become addicted with just one prescription. -People who committed a crime may be under the influence of drugs. - The majority of people when asked what the most addictive drug is, mention oxycodone. - For many of the people in the video, their addiction started in unexpected ways. Most of them were brought up in healthy, stable environments. It was through things like doctors prescriptions, or a trusting friend who recommended trying “a pill” to help them feel better, which led to addiction. -Many of the addicts are in denial about their addiction, and they could quit whenever they wanted. -Almost everyone that uses heroin also uses another drug. -Many started with marihuana and moved on to harder drugs.
